Information About the Piqua Shawnee Tribe
Currently, there are nine tribes that are recognized by the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission. The Piqua Shawnee tribe is one of these nine tribes. This is a tribe that has existed in parts of what is currently Alabama for hundreds of years now and evidence can be found of this tribe all the way back to what would be the 17th century. The people that live around where this tribe has been located have definitely been able to learn more about this tribe because they are a big tribe there. Within this article, you will be able to learn more about what the Piqua Shawnee tribe has done and how they have been able to affect others.
Originally, the Shawnee tribe was centered in Indiana and Ohio that exists today. The Piqua section of the Shawnee tribe was one of five divisions and this specific division was named because of the legend of an evil man that died and came back to help a group of Shawnee members walk in harmony together. Coming out of their fire through their smoke, this man would appear in front of the Shawnee people as a man that came back from being dead.
After some time, these people were forced to disperse due to the fact that other tribes wanted what they had. Some of the people that scattered ended up in what is Alabama today. In this new area, the Piqua Shawnee were able to live among many of the other tribes that were already there. A lot of traders that were travelling through Alabama and saw these individuals usually assumed that they were in one tribe rather than being several tribes. There were many wars that followed in the coming years and during this time, many of the Shawnee in other areas started to seek refuge in this larger tribe that was in the south of the country. As time went on, this tribe grew and grew.
Some of the historians think that the people in the Shawnee tribe have possibly lived in Alabama longer than any other place. Many archaeologists that have studied this tribe believe that there is evidence to show this tribe lived in this same area since around the late 1600s.
In today’s world, many people are ancestors of this tribe and many of them still happen to live in Alabama. Many families within the tribe ended up in different areas of the country, however, due to political policies that would come about later during the Andrew Jackson administration. A lot of information has been lost on this tribe because of this, but there is still plenty to learn.
